For the past fifty-six years, Monroe County Community Credit Union has been a locally owned and operated financial institution. We have protected the finances of the residents and employees in Monroe County and our members have come to count on us to provide a full range of products and services.
Originally founded as the Consolidated Paper Credit Union, was formed in late 1953. Several vital changes have taken place within the credit union since then, which created the community charter that exists now. Most importantly were the mergers of several other credit unions to establish what is now known as Monroe County Community Credit Union. These other credit unions included River Raisin Employees CU, Maceo Employees FCU, Monroe Paper Products CU, and Monroe Affiliated Locals CU.
Many changes took place in the 1970s.The credit union purchased the building at 14 Winchester Street and transformed it into a full-service financial institution, complete with teller windows and its first Automated Teller Machine. The old Billtmore Restaurant located at 414 Telegraph Road was also purchased by the credit union and renovated to accommodate for the expanding membership.
MCCCU had its name and charter officially changed in October 1982 by the State of Michigan. To date, anyone who lives or works in MonroeCounty is eligible to be a member of the credit union.Once an individual is a member, all immediate family members are eligible.
As the credit union blossomed, a third branch became necessary to keep up with member demand. The 3,000 square foot branch in Temperance was opened for business in 1990 to serve SouthCounty members.Five teller stations, two lending offices, three drive-up units, and a large member service area began to serve members in Bedford, Whitford, and Erie townships.
Finally, 1998 launched the opening of the new main office location at 715 North Telegraph Road. The new structure offered eight teller stations, innovative cash dispensers, and six drive-up units including an ATM. Offices for loan closings were designed for privacy protection.
Since 2006, MCCCU has merged in Monroe County Municipalities Employees Credit Union as well as Monroe Area Federal Credit Union. The grand opening celebration for the fifth branch was in December 2008 in Newport and an Operations Center now exists on Elm Avenue.
Looking back on a half century of service, MCCCU has proven themselves a solid fixture in the community through abundant growth, loyal membership, and relentless efforts to better the financial health of their members.Community involvement has always been a high priority for the credit union from contributing annual funds necessary for upkeep of local organizations, to donating time developing financial education curriculum for area school systems.
We are proud of our history and look forward to a future that is even stronger. We invite you to explore all that Monroe County's largest community credit union has to offer.
